As the facility for male offenders sentenced to solitary imprisonment and confinement at hard labor, the State Prison through its warden was legally authorized by writ of mittimus (commitment warrant) to hold each inmate. The original writ was kept at the court where the offender was sentenced and a copy of the commitment warrant sent with him when commitment took place. Additional transactions were noted by the warden on warrants in his custody.

The State Prison was opened in 1805 at Charlestown, Boston, as a successor to the prison on Castle Island. During 1878-1884 the prison was closed and inmates kept at Concord. The State Asylum for Insane Criminals was established in Massachusetts in 1895 at the State Workhouse in Bridgewater. Under the workhouse's successor, the State Farm (from 1887), the asylum was renamed Bridgewater State Hospital in 1909.
